Vegetable farmers in Ikorodu specializing in ugwu welcomed the distribution of federal government fertilizers facilitated by Representative Jimi Benson on Tuesday.
This initiative, aimed at empowering local farmers, saw the allocation of 600 bags of 50kg fertilizer across the constituency.
Led by the Supervisors for Agriculture in Ikorodu Local Government and the six Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), the distribution event marked an impact towards enhancing crop yields and ensuring food security in the region.
Mayor Dean Sanwo-Ola, Executive Assistant to the Governor on Lagos Parking Authority, commended the initiative and highlighted Ikorodu’s important role in agriculture, particularly in Ugwu (fluted pumpkin) production, debunking misconceptions about the area’s farming capabilities he also emphasized Ikorodu’s potential as a leading producer of ugwu vegetables in Lagos State.
Honorable Alejo Musbau, Supervisor for Agriculture in Ikorodu, stated the federal government’s commitment to supporting agricultural development through initiatives spearheaded by Representative Jimi Benson.
He highlighted the transformative impact of the fertilizer distribution on local farming communities, foreseeing increased agricultural output as a result.
Princess Abisoye Oredoyin, an official overseeing the distribution, underscored the practical benefits for farmers, noting previous successes in similar programs aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector in Ikorodu.
Local farmers, including Memenah Thomas and Thomas Fidelis, expressed gratitude for the timely support, emphasizing how access to quality fertilizers will enable them to improve their yields and contribute to sustainable food production in the community.
