The United States Mission in Nigeria on Monday restated, in a message shared on its official social media platforms, that the safety and security of the United States remain the foundation of its visa application and decision making process.

The clarification, which circulated widely online, followed discussions and concerns raised by Nigerians over the new U.S. visa policy that reduced validity and limited most non-immigrant, non-diplomatic visas to three months and single entry.

U.S Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, explained that the changes were not targeted at Nigerians but were part of a global review of visa operations aimed at strengthening security and ensuring compliance.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Mills emphasized that protecting the United States is the top priority guiding all visa decisions. He added that visa compliance is critical in maintaining mutual trust and respect between both countries.

“The safety and security of the United States remain the cornerstone of our visa process. These adjustments are consistent with our responsibility to protect our country and enhance the integrity of our immigration system,” the envoy stated.

The U.S Mission also announced through its online channels, a collaborative public enlightenment campaign with Nigeria’s Ministry of Information and National Orientation. The initiative is designed to help Nigerians better understand the new policy and its requirements, while encouraging lawful travel and adherence to U.S visa rules.

According to the Mission, the recent changes should not be viewed as punitive measures but as a step in line with security and technical benchmarks applied across different countries.

The U.S stressed its continued commitment to strong bilateral ties with Nigeria, highlighting the importance of lawful travel and compliance as central to sustaining the partnership.
