The U.S. House has voted to impeach Donald Trump for inciting last week’s deadly Capitol siege on charges with a single article “incitement of insurrection”.
Trump becomes the first president in the United States history to be impeached twice.
Interestingly, ten Republicans joined their Democratic colleagues in voting in favor of the impeachment resolution. The resolution passed 232 to 197.
The House impeachment will lead to a trial in the Senate, where a two-thirds majority is needed to convict Trump. However, an outcome appears unlikely before Biden is sworn in as president.
Recall the Capitol Hill was attacked by his supporters who halted a joint session to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, following Trump’s false claims of election fraud.
Trump survived a first impeachment almost exactly a year ago when the Republican-controlled Senate acquitted him of abusing his office to try and get dirt on Biden’s family before the election.
