A devastating incident has shaken the community of Apata in Ido local government area of Ibadan, Oyo State, after five worshippers lost their lives and several others were hospitalized following a “love feast” at a white garment church.
According to Punch, the tragedy occurred last Sunday, September 22, 2024, when congregants gathered for the customary “ipese” meal. Shortly after consumption, many began to exhibit severe symptoms, leading to the rushed hospitalization of scores.
The Infectious Disease Centre in Olodo confirmed the deaths and reported that 50 victims have been treated and discharged. Health officials are working tirelessly to identify the cause of the illness.
“We are investigating the incident and working closely with relevant agencies to determine the cause of the deaths,” said Police Public Relations Officer Adewale Osifeso.
A church source, requesting anonymity, expressed skepticism about the role of the “ipese” meal in the tragedy. “I ate the same food and am fine. We await the investigation findings.”
Government agencies, including the Police, DSS, and World Health Organization, are collaborating on the investigation.
