Toyin Gafaar’s Bolowotan Gold Cup Begins In Grand Style

One of Lagos foremost grassroots football development competition, the Bolowotan Memorial Gold Cup was kicked off on Sunday with games played at the Police Playing Ground, Ikorodu amidst pomp. This year’s edition is the 10th since it was commenced.

In a chat with newsmen, the sponsor of the competition, Toyin Gafaar popularly known as Bolowotan disclosed that the aim of the Bolowotan Gold Cup is to take people off the streets and engage them in a positive endeavor.
According to Gafaar, the Bolowotan Gold Cup which is otherwise known as the ‘Ikorodu World Cup‘ has been a platform for Nigerian league clubs to recruit raw talent.
“We have scouts from the local league attend the games to select players. We also have a system of supporting the best performers at the games to attend trials in clubs abroad,” the football loving Toyin Gafaar disclosed.

Toyin Gafaar, a former board member of the Lagos State Football Association and Chairman of Bolowotan Football Club further disclosed that MFM FC will be picking the two best midfielders of this year’s Bolowotan Gold Cup.
“A technical committee has been set up to select the best two midfielders who will be recommended to the Chief Coach of MFM FC, Fidelis Ilechukwu, to join the Nigeria Professional Football League side because we have an existing relationship with the club’s management.”

In the opening match, Super Force Football Club of Mushin whitewashed Sharon Football Club of Ikorodu 4-1.
The next match comes up between New Star FC and Ultimate Villa FC at the Police Barracks field in Ikorodu.
