Below are the top stories from today’s newspapers.

1. The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Samuel Ortom on Security, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Christopher Dega (retd) was murdered yesterday.

Gov Ortom who confirmed the incident, said the aide was killed in Jos, the Plateau State capital.

2. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the establishment of oxygen production plant in each of the 36 states of the country.

The project would cost an estimated N5.6 billion. Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed briefed State House correspondents on behalf of Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire.

3. Social media giants Twitter, yesterday  deleted President Muhammadu Buhari’s threat tweet.

Buhari, in a tweet had threatened to deal with Nigerians “misbehaving” in a language they will understand.

While several Nigerians were jubilating over the deletion, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, accused Twitter of double standard.

4. The Chief of Army Staff, Maj.-Gen. Farouk Yahaya, on Wednesday said only the ground forces in the military cannot contain the enormous security challenges ravaging the country.

The COAS stated this when he paid a courtesy visit to his counterpart at the Air Force, the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, at the Nigerian Air Force Headquarters, Abuja.

5. The House of Representatives’ Special Committee on Constitution Review, on Wednesday received a proposal to change Nigeria’s name to the United African Republic.

This development comes amidst the ongoing efforts by the National Assembly to amend the 1999 constitution.

Presenting the proposal at the South West Zonal Public Hearing in Lagos, Adeleye Jokotoye, a tax consultant said Nigeria’s current name was an imposition of its past colonial masters and should be changed.

6. A bill that seeks to end the discrimination between First Degrees graduates from universities and Higher National Diploma (HND) holders from polytechnics , passed third hearing in the senate yesterday.

7. The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has sacked two of its senior lecturers who were exposed in the sex-for-grades documentary by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

The affected lecturers are -Dr Boniface Igbeneghu of the Department of European Language and Integrated Studies and Dr Samuel Oladipo of the Department of Economics.

9. University of Ibadan on Wednesday announced physical resumption of academic activities for June 7, 2021. A notice by the Registrar, Mrs. Olubunmi Faluyi, said the institution will open for physical lectures and examination for the rest of first semester of the 2020/2021 academic season on June 7.
