Bolaji Amusan, popularly known as Mr. Latin, President of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), delivered an inspiring goodwill message to students at the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) programme themed Media Literacy and Capacity Building held on November 26, 2024, at the Afe Babalola Hall, University of Lagos (UNILAG).
Addressing participants, the veteran actor and filmmaker emphasized the importance of combining practical skills with academic qualifications to excel in the creative industry and beyond.
“There’s no wasted knowledge,” he stated, expressing gratitude to the event’s convener, Dr. Shaibu Husseini, and his team for organizing such an impactful programme.
He commended the dedication of students from various institutions, including University of Lagos (UNILAG), Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), and Trinity University, urging them to seize the opportunity to learn from the speakers.
Reflecting on his personal journey, Mr. Latin revealed how a lack of formal education initially held him back despite his success in the film industry. “I’ve achieved almost everything I’m destined to achieve, but I have no certificate. Whenever we gather with other creative industry players, you’ll hear them talking about their MS, PhD, and other qualifications. The only thing my colleagues and I can boast about is our practical training,” he said.
To address this gap, Mr. Latin returned to school, pursuing cinematography and film studies at Christian University and currently studying film and resolution in his final year at the National Open University of Nigeria.
He urged students to prioritize education alongside practical training, noting that certificates often open doors to opportunities that experience alone cannot secure. “There will come a time when, despite your practical experience, people will ask you for your certificate. How will you get that appointment without an academic certificate to back up your claim?” he asked.
The programme, organized to enhance media literacy and capacity-building skills, attracted students, professionals, and stakeholders in the creative industry. Mr. Latin concluded by applauding the efforts of the organizers and encouraging students to make the most of the knowledge gained.
“May God almighty bless you all. Thank you to the organizers, thank you to the students, and thank you to everyone. God bless you,” he said.
