Omoyele Sowore, the former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has demanded the imprisonment of former military leaders Ibrahim Babangida (IBB), Olusegun Obasanjo, Abdulsalami Abubakar, and former Senate President David Mark following IBB’s admission about the 1993 June 12 election.

During the launch of his autobiography, A Journey of Service, on Thursday, Babangida acknowledged that Moshood Abiola was the rightful winner of the annulled election.

This revelation has sparked controversy, with Sowore now accusing these leaders of responsibility for the tragic events surrounding the election and its aftermath.

On X, Sowore expressed that Babangida’s admission, which states that Abiola “satisfied all the requirements to be declared President of Nigeria,” was enough reason for IBB, Obasanjo, Abubakar, and Mark to face legal consequences.

Sowore wrote: “MKO Abiola won the June 12 1993 election, he satisfied all the requirements to be declared President of Nigeria says evil man Babangida. This is the reason these guys Babangida, Obasanjo, Abubakar Salam, and David Mark must be in jail.”

Earlier in the day, Sowore had also predicted that Babangida would attempt to deflect blame onto late General Sani Abacha for the annulment of the elections.

In a statement, he remarked, “Today (Thursday), former Nigerian dictator Ibrahim Babangida will launch his book, which is expected to falsely blame late General Sanni Abacha, another wicked dictator, for the annulment of June 12 elections, on doing so he will be admitting they were free and fair.”

Sowore’s remarks are part of his criticism of the military regime’s role in the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election and the subsequent injustice faced by MKO Abiola.
