Senate Holds Public Hearing On Threat Posed By Smuggling

Nigerian Senate on Monday had a public hearing to discuss ways to tackle the spate of smuggling as it poses a great danger to the economy of the country.

The public hearing had in attendance President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki and Comptroller General of Customs, Ahmeed Ali.

Sen Saraki stated that it was important for the stakeholders to thinker on ways to solve the smuggling practice as it was a great threat to the implementation of the economic policies and programs of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said, “At the local level, smuggling threatens the ability of our small-scale industries to compete against their foreign counterparts.”

He stated that many small businesses who have taken up loans have been unable to repay as illegally imported goods which are cheaper in the market have edged them out.

“The act of smuggling is unacceptable. In order to support the economic policies of this present administration, the 8th Senate is committed to doing all it takes to end smuggling in Nigeria.

He further disclosed that the Senate will collaborate with the Customs and all other relevant agencies to structure ways to curb the illegal activities of the smugglers before it cripples the nation’s economy.
