Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, as well his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, on Wednesday, officially launched IKD Radio 106.1 FM, an initiative of the lawmaker representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and Chairman House Committee on Defence, Hon. Babajimi Adegoke Benson.

The community radio station, the first and only in the State, officially commenced transmission on March 7. It is located within the Babajimi Benson constituency office at Plot 48, Ebute-Igbogbo Road by Solebo Estate Gate, Ikorodu, Lagos.

The event had in attendance dignitaries across Ikorodu Division, traditional leaders, members of iCare Foundation, among others.

Speaking after the commissioning, Governor Sanwo-Olu gave a brief remark live on air via the station, describing the initiative as a milestone achievement.

“This is another milestone achievement coming to Ikorodu. Media in whatever form brings the people to the Government and I am sure this new community radio station will project the voice of the good people of Ikorodu to this current administration,” he said.

“With everything we have seen in Ikorodu today as regards development, this is just another icing on the cake to opening more progressive doors and making Ikorodu Division a region to identify with in the whole of Lagos State.”

According to Mr. Adeniyi Kunnu, General Manager, IKD106.1FM, the project towed the path laid by a former Minister of Information, Broadcasting and Culture in the first post-independence Nigeria, Chief Theophilus Owolabi Shobowale Benson (T.O.S Benson; 1917-2008) who is credited for the facilitation of the establishment of the Voice of Nigeria in Ikorodu.

“IKD 106.1FM is a redefinition of radio broadcast at the community level, a unique unfurling of media relations and communications in all sense of professionalism, a reference point to all and sundry in the realization of unmatched vision and an unarguable addition to value towards the elevation of humanity in the areas of knowledge and efficiency as it concerns a livable, lovable and enviable Ikorodu first and by extension, Lagos,” Kunnu said.

He added that the languages of broadcast include Ijebu (the primary language of the people of Ikorodu) Yoruba, English Language, and Pidgin English. Broadcast opens daily from 05:30 HRS – 23:00 HRS.
