Guinness World Records has officially confirmed Samson Olalekan Ajao, a native of Iwo in Osun State, Nigeria, as the new world record holder for the longest marathon reading aloud.
Ajao’s remarkable feat has set a new benchmark in literary endurance, as he read continuously for an unprecedented 215 hours and 2 seconds.
This achievement, which far surpasses the previous record of 124 hours held by Rybai Isakov of Bursa, Turkey, took place at the Adolak Conference Hall in Osogbo.
Ajao began his marathon reading session on May 6, 2024, and continued non-stop for 10 days, completing a marathon of approximately 100 books.
The grueling challenge tested Ajao’s mental and physical stamina, requiring him to remain focused and articulate for over 9 days. Despite the immense pressure, he successfully broke the record and etched his name in history.
Following his achievement, Ajao was honored by the Oluwo of Iwoland, Ọba (Dr) AbdulRosheed Adéwálé Akanbi. In a special ceremony, the monarch lauded Ajao’s determination and perseverance, presenting him with a copy of his own book, Code of Kings, as a token of appreciation.
The accomplishment is seen as a testament to the power of literacy and the importance of setting and pursuing ambitious goals.
The official Guinness World Records website has confirmed Ajao’s record, solidifying his place in history as the longest marathon reader aloud.
Ajao, who is affectionately known as “Impeccable” by his peers, is a former Student Union President of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree. His journey to this achievement reflects his deep commitment to literacy and education, values he has consistently championed throughout his life.
The announcement of Ajao’s accomplishment was made public by the record holder himself in a heartfelt Facebook post on Friday. “I am overwhelmed with joy and gratitude to God, my family, friends, and an indefatigable team for making this big dream come to reality,” he wrote. “Today, I was confirmed as the new world record title holder for the longest marathon reading aloud by the Guinness World Record. I am glad to be an advocate for literacy development.”
