Reactions trail Sanwo-Olu’s face-off with CSP in Magodo

Nigerians have taken to social media to share their thoughts on the encounter between Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and an unidentified Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) during his visit to Magodo Estate Phase II, on Tuesday.

The mild face-off ensued between the governor and the police officer when he visited the highbrow area to address the continued heavy police presence around the estate.

In a video recorded currently making rounds on social media, the CSP said he and his men are manning the estate on the orders of Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation, and Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector-General of Police.

In his response to the officer, the governor asked him to call his superiors in Abuja to give him orders to vacate the premises.

“Can you tell your superiors in Abuja that the governor is here, and I am the chief security officer, and that you have no business being in my state?” Sanwo-Olu said.

But the police officer, however, told the governor to make the call himself.

“When I make that phone call, it will be tougher,” the governor further said.

Sanwo-Olu also stated that he had made two separate phone calls to the IGP and the AGF, and that the latter told him he was not aware of any deployment of police officers to the area.

He also said the police officers have no business manning the estate as they are not from the Lagos State Police Command.

However, reactions have been trailing this encounter, most of which highlighted the powerlessness of state governors to secure their states and raised the question of state police and federalism. While some Nigerians expressed shock about what democracy had turned into.
