A High Court in Asaba, Delta State, has sentenced Police Inspector Ubi Ebri to death for the murder of Mr. Ibeh Onyeka, a phone dealer.
The incident occurred on April 5, 2023, at a checkpoint in Asaba when Inspector Ebri allegedly shot and killed Mr. Onyeka for refusing to pay a N100 bribe.
The prosecution, led by E.H. Edema from the Ministry of Justice, presented evidence that Inspector Ebri, part of a police patrol team conducting a stop-and-search operation, fatally shot Mr. Onyeka during the encounter.
The victim, accompanied by his wife, was driving from Ugbolu to Asaba when they were stopped by the police.
Despite his wife being unhurt, Mr. Onyeka sustained fatal injuries to the head from the gunfire.
Presiding over the case, Justice C. D. Diai convicted Inspector Ebri and sentenced him to death on Tuesday, June 12, 2024.
