A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel room after an encounter with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker.

Uwuigbe, a lecturer in the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, reportedly died at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, on October 5.

According to the Edo State Police Command, Uwuigbe had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of a woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.

Police spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the lecturer later sent the woman out to buy water.

“When she returned, she found him lying dead in the room,” Ikoedem said.

The incident was reported to the police at about 8pm, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.

The hotel owner, manager and the 21-year-old woman have been arrested and are assisting the police with the investigation.

Uwuigbe’s remains have been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.

Meanwhile, AAU confirmed that Uwuigbe was a staff member of the university but stressed that the incident happened outside the institution.

The university’s spokesperson, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, also clarified that the woman involved was not an AAU student.

“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” he said.

Police have not disclosed the cause of death, and investigations are ongoing to determine exactly what happened before Uwuigbe was found dead.
