Osun APC primary: Oyetola wins Aregbesola’s ward as minister heads for political doom

There are strong indications that an abrupt end awaits the political career of the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola as results from Saturday’s governorship primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State continue to trickle in.

The ex-governor who is backing former Secretary to the State Government, Moshood Adeoti, against his successor and incumbent governor, Gboyega Oyetola, has reportedly been roundly disgraced at the primaries.

BlackBox Nigeria earlier reported that there has been palpable tension in Osun ahead of the heated contest for the APC guber ticket.

In Ward 8 Ilesa East LGA which is Aregbesola’s home base, his anointed candidate could only secure 124 votes, while Oyetola won the ward overwhelmingly with 309 votes.

In a similar fashion, Oyetola won his ward, Iragbiji, Boripe LGA, with 1,612 votes to beat two other aspirants, Adeoti and former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Lasun Yusuf who had no votes.

“This is my ward, and I don’t expect anything less,” he boasted after he emerged winner.

Though results are still pouring in, many have since predicted that the incumbent governor will no doubt secure the APC guber ticket to seek for re-election, citing his unassailable lead over his rivals.

Meanwhile, for Aregbesola, who leads a faction of the Osun APC and publicly working against Oyetola, his recent outbursts against his erstwhile political benefactor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu might be his greatest undoing. While his candidate heads for a certain loss, what would become of the minister’s political career is perhaps the biggest question on the lips of actors in the Osun political circle at the moment.
