By The 93rd Academy Awards was held on Sunday night in Los Angeles at both the Dolby Theatre and Union Station. Though the ceremony came a bit later than planned, two months after the original date — all thanks to the pandemic.
This year’s Oscars was in some way downsized, away from the regular — socially distanced. The Academy adopted a telecast directed by five-time Academy Awards telecast director Glenn Weiss.
There were a few historic moments. “Minari” star Youn Yuh-jung became the first Korean and second Asian woman to win Best Supporting Actress.
Chloé Zhao won the Best Director trophy for “Nomadland,” becoming the first woman of Asian descent and the second woman ever to win a Best Director award. Until Zhao’s win this year, Kathryn Bigelow was the only female filmmaker to take home an Oscar for Best Director — for her 2009 “The Hurt Locker”.
Arguably the biggest winner of the night was “Mank,” which clinched 10 nominations — including top awards like Best Picture, Best Director for David Fincher, Best Actor for Gary Oldman and Best Supporting Actress for Amanda Seyfried.
