The Ogun State Government has suspended the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, over allegations of involvement in partisan political activities.

The suspension was approved by the State Executive Council under Section 52(1) of the Ogun State Obas and Chiefs Law, 2021.

The decision was conveyed in a letter dated October 20, 2026, and signed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat.

According to the government, the suspension followed several complaints about the monarch’s conduct, including allegations that he engaged in partisan politics, some of which were reportedly publicised by the monarch himself.

The government said such conduct contravened customary law and statutory provisions governing traditional rulers in the state.

It added that partisan political involvement by a traditional ruler could undermine the dignity of the traditional institution and threaten peaceful coexistence among residents with different political affiliations.

As part of the suspension, Oba Akinyemi has been directed to vacate the palace immediately and must not enter it for the duration of the suspension.

He has also been barred from presenting himself as the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom or claiming recognition in that capacity while the suspension remains in force.

The government further prohibited him from wearing or using any crown, including a beaded crown, ileke, beaded staff, irukere or other regalia associated with the office of an Oba during the period.

The suspended monarch is also required to make himself available for any meeting or sitting convened by the state government as part of the investigation into the allegations.

The government said the action was taken in the interest of peace, order and good governance in Ogun State, particularly in Iselu Kingdom.

The suspension will remain in place pending the outcome of the investigation into the allegations against the traditional ruler.
