“I Did Nothing Wrong Dating Serving Police Officer”- IGP Idris Reveals

The Senate ad-hoc Committee got a shocking response from the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris as he defends an allegation levelled against him.

Senator Isa Misau of Bauchi Central had raised concerns over the IGP’s affair with a serving Police Officer, but in response, Mr Idris defended that no law prevents him from marrying a female Police officer.

Idris response was communicated to the Senate Committee by his lawyer, Alex Iziyon (SAN). The response which was obtained by a major newspaper showed that the Inspector General responded to each of the six allegations levelled on him by the lawmaker.

In addition, the IGP taked Senator Misau to cite the section of the law that forbids him from having an affiar with a Policewoman, adding that lawmaker’s father indeed married the lawmaker’s mother while both of them were active in Police service.

The IG described the allegations of having an affair with two female Police officer who got questionable promotions as laughable and showed a lack of understanding of the provisions of the Police Act and Regulation.

Until he brings such section of the Police Act, it will amount to discussing the Inspector-General of Police’s private life, which ordinarily should not have been entertained on the floor of the Senate.

“It might be appropriate to remind the senator, whose mother retired from the police as an Inspector of Police and a father who retired from the police as an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, that the Inspector-General of Police is a Moslem and, according to Islamic Law, can marry four wives provided he can love them equally.

“The senator also alleged that the Inspector-General of Police is in a relationship with one Corporal Amina whom he claimed was promoted from the rank of Corporal to an Assistant Superintendent of Police within 12 months.

“This allegation is false and the senator is under obligation to give the full particulars of the female police (officer), where she is serving and her duty post. It is not possible to promote a corporal to the rank of an ASP except the officer has attended an in-service cadet course.”

It will be recalled that the IG had earlier declined the Senate Committee invitation due to an ongoing Court case, but he later appeared on Wednesday. He was accompanied by his lawyer, Iziyon and Special Assistant to the President on National Assemblt Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang.
