There was palpable tension along Court Road in the Sabon Gari area of Kano State after a gas explosion rocked an an animal feed in the area in the earlier hours of Tuesday.
According to The PUNCH, the unfortunate incident occurred near a private secondary school in the area, and destroyed a residential building and affected part of the school.
The newspaper reported that there were visuals from the scene showing several injured students and parents rushing to rescue their children.
It was learnt that though of the students have been rescued, others however remain stranded while security operatives already surrounded the area.
Report has it that the death toll from the explosion has now risen to nine, as announced by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs.
Vanguard Newspapers had reported that four bodies had been recovered from rubbles of the affected building.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Information in Kano State, Malam Muhammad Garba, in a statement had clarified that the incident did not occur in a school but at an animal feed store opposite the school along Aba Road, Sabon Gari area of Fagge Local Government of the state.
Garba added that the cause of the explosion is yet to be officially ascertained and an investigation has since commenced to determine the cause, impact and measures to be taken.
He encouraged the people in the state, particularly those living in the area where the incident occurred to remain calm while the government in collaboration with relevant agencies work on the matter at hand.
