Nigerians React As Access Bank Lays Off 75% Of Staff After Donating N1bn To Fight COVID19

 

One of Nigeria’s biggest lenders, Access Bank Plc is currently under attack as the bank retrenches over 75% of its workforce amidst COVID19 pandemic and also after donating N1bn to the Federal government.

BlackBox Nigeria reliably gathered that the retrenchment was made known by the Managing Director, Herbert Wigwe during the Emoloyee Town Hall meeting which was held online. The MD/CEO declared that since Branch operations wouldn’t be resuming till around December, it was necessary for the bank to take necessary measures so as to cut operational costs.

Mr Wigwe also disclosed that among those affected were tellers, cleaners and security guards, which he said their services will not be needed in coming months due to the current global pandemic that has crippled branch operations of all banks. He also added that the remaining 25% staff will have a pay cut which starts from himself as he said his own salary will be reduced by 40%. Watch the video below…

Reacting to this development, social media users accused the bank of playing to the gallery by donating a whooping amount of N1bn to the Federal government as support to join in the fight against coronavirus then turn around to cut its staff strength and also slash their salaries.
