Newcastle have completed a £12m signing of Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid, making the Englishman the first signing under their new owner.

The relegation-threatened club had been on the radar of Trippier before the opening of the transfer window as they seek lasting solution to their leaky defense. Sitting 19th on the league table, Newcastle had 42 goals scored against them.

The signature of Trippier on a two-and-half year deal appeared to be a solution to Newcastle’s defensive problem. Having spent most of his career at the Premier League before joining Atletico Madrid, Newcastle seek to benefit from the 31-year-old’s experience and versatility.

Expressing his delight, Trippier looks forward to reunite with Eddie Howe who he once played for at Burnley.

“I’m delighted to be joining this fantastic club. I really enjoyed my time in Madrid, but when I became aware of interest from Newcastle United, and having worked with Eddie Howe before, I knew this was where I wanted to be, ” the former Tottenham player told the club’s website.

He further admitted to the challenge that lies ahead, saying: “I’m aware there is a lot of work ahead of us but I know the demands of Premier League well and I know what an amazing club this is with very talented players. I can’t wait to get started and I’m excited to step out at St. James’ Park as a Newcastle player.”

Also commenting on the Trippier’s signing, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe lauds the ability of his new signing. He also admitted to have been tracking Trippier’s progress over time.

“I am really pleased to welcome Kieran. I have long admired his abilities and have followed his career, so when the opportunity arose to secure him, we didn’t hesitate,” the Newcastle boss said.
