A native doctor, Ismail Usman, sustained severe injuries after testing a self-made “bulletproof” charm in Kuchibiyi, Bwari Area Council, Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
According to a report by Daily Trust, the incident occurred on Thursday when Usman fired a locally made gun at himself to prove the charm’s effectiveness. Witnesses revealed that the charm failed, leaving him critically wounded.
“He collapsed immediately after the gunshot,” said Samson Ayuba, a resident of the area. “Neighbors quickly rushed him to the hospital.”
FCT Police Command spokesperson, SP Adeh Josephine, confirmed the incident, noting that officers from the Byazhin division responded promptly.
“The victim was initially taken to Kubwa General Hospital but was later transferred to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, for advanced treatment,” she said.
A search of Usman’s residence uncovered a homemade firearm and various charms. Investigations are underway, and the native doctor may face charges of unlawful possession of firearms and attempted suicide, both offenses under Section 231 of the Penal Code.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, condemned the act, highlighting the dangers of illegal firearms and unregulated traditional practices.
“This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with reckless behavior and illegal weapons. We urge the public to prioritize safety and report unlawful activities,” he stated.
