Manchester United Completes The Double Against City Rivals, Climbs Up To 5th Position
The second leg of the Manchester Derby ended in the favour of Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s side as two goals from Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay completed a home and away wins for the Old Trafford team this season.
It will be recalled that the first leg of this season derby was played on December 7th at the Etihad Stadium where Manchester United denied the Citizens their usual comfortable win thereby bagging all 3 points. It was however same moments ago when the return leg was played at Old Trafford and puts the tally of derby win of Solksjaer to three since he became Manager.
French striker, Martial had put United in front after converting a looped free kick from Bruno Fernandes. It was his first touch at the ball and he fired it passed City’s goalkeeper, Ederson who watched it slide into the net. The home side maintained the lead till end of first half.
City started the second half on high notes as they created chances at goal but were repelled by United defenders; Maguire, Wan-Bissaka, Lindolf and Luke Shaw. Also, all Raheem Sterling’s efforts were frustrated by Wan-Bissaka who totally locked the skipper out of United’s box.
Ederson’s late mistake of throwing the ball at Mendy went into McTominay’s possession who immediately fired it to the net and secured the game in United’s favour.
The 3points won today has seen Manchester United moved from 7th position to 5th, a position they intend to keep as they aspire to play in Europe next season. The club has also gone 10 games unbeaten.
