Looted Abuja warehouse doesn’t belong to us, says NEMA
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said the warehouse in Abuja looted by angry residents doesn’t belong to the agency.
On Sunday, tens of residents raided the warehouse located in Karimo, Phase 3 region of the nation’s capital. They were said to have carted away with food items as Nigeria battles its worst food inflation in almost three decades. It took the intervention of the police to disperse the crowd. Earlier reports claimed the warehouse belonged to NEMA.
But in a statement, the agency insisted that it doesn’t own the looted facility.
“This is to clarify that the looted warehouse does not belong to NEMA. However, the Agency sympathizes with owners of the looted facility,” part of the statement read.
NEMA said its Director General Mustapha Habib Ahmed has directed Zonal Directors and Heads of Operations to strengthen security in the agency’s offices and warehouses across the nation to prevent such incidents.
