LASU Mourns Student Killed After Armed Robbery Attack in Lagos

Lagos State University (LASU) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of one of its students, Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, who died from injuries sustained during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Acting Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Mr. Olaniyi S. Jeariogbe, the university identified the deceased as a student of the Department of History and International Studies, Faculty of Arts, with matriculation number 240341269.

According to the university, the incident occurred off campus on the night of Friday, May 29, 2026, when Otabor and his friends were reportedly attacked by armed robbers.

LASU said that upon receiving reports of the attack, the institution, through the Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, immediately provided support, escalated the matter to the Vice-Chancellor, and maintained communication with medical personnel handling the student’s treatment while closely monitoring his condition throughout his hospitalization.

The university disclosed that Otabor eventually succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, on behalf of the university’s management, staff, students and the wider university community, extended condolences to the deceased’s family, friends and colleagues.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they mourn this tragic loss,” the statement said.

LASU added that following news of the student’s death, representatives of the institution engaged with his family, officials of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and law enforcement authorities.

The university said it is actively cooperating with security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation into the attack and to bring those responsible to justice.

The institution prayed for the repose of Otabor’s soul and for strength for his family and loved ones to bear the loss.
