LAGOS YOUTH COUNCIL POSITION ON THE LAGOS JUDICIAL PANEL OF INQUIRY REPORT
All struggles with good Intention globally have always ended on the dialogue table for the good of all. The call for EndSARS no doubt was long overdue because police brutality has been on the rise and already became persistent pain for the youths and the populace at large. The EndSARS protest is not just a Lagos issue but a Nigerian tragedy.
The leadership of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Lagos State Chapter followed the Panel of inquiry process and are satisfied by the level of transparency, empathy and sincerity displayed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu.
Lagos State is a peaceful and prosperous city that provides opportunities for growth to all and sundry. This we can’t afford to unconsciously throw away, hence the reason we are calling for a synergy between the government and the residents, especially the youths to join hands in restoring the peace, progress and unity of our dear State.
We commend the panel members for ensuring thorough investigation and for coming up with resolutions and recommendations which does not just address the EndSARS casualties but as well proposed a better care for our police officers.
Our resolutions:
- That this is the time to consider the Lagos State Youth Charter right bill by Mr Governor and the Lagos State House of Assembly.
- That we are in support of the Peaceful Walk with Mr Governor and creation of a peace park.
- That the EndSARS protest is a struggle of young people in the country and must not be politicized.
- That We commend the Lagos State governor for making moves to heal the ugly relationship between the Youth and the Police by hosting the Police Youth Dialogue, Lagos Youth symposium (Peaceful Conflict Resolution) and for welcoming the youth proposal on the way forward.
- That adequate compensation be given to those affected by the effect of the EndSARS protest as recommended by the Panel of inquiry.
- That compensation should be extended to businesses affected by the EndSARS protest.
- That the promise to activate the restoration process with a walk, creation of an agency that attends to complaints of the youth through the Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Youth must have due youthful representation.
- That the Lagos Youth must trust the process and not just depend their knowledge of the issue at hand on only what they read on social media platforms.
- We appreciate Mr Governor for identifying with the EndSARS struggle from the beginning till this moment not out of fear or weakness but out of courage, true love for the Youths and democratic principles.
- That a more robust youthful projects be implemented in the year 2022.
- That the Nigerian Police Force and appropriate government body must work together to review the operations and strategies of the Nigerian Police in line with the Panel of Inquiry report and the ambit of laws of the federation.
