Lagos State Deputy Governor and 2027 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Obafemi Hamzat, has highlighted his knowledge of the state’s political history as a key reason he believes he is prepared to govern Lagos.
Hamzat spoke on Sunday at the 70th Harvest Anniversary and Thanksgiving Service of the Cherubim and Seraphim Society, Olorunsogo Parish, Ese-Ofin, Lagos.
The deputy governor said his familiarity with the state’s political history, including the people who have governed Lagos in the past, would help him navigate the challenges of governing the state.
“I know the people that have ruled this state before and if I have any problems on land issues, I know where to go.
“Though nobody is perfect, I understand Lagos thoroughly,” he said.
Hamzat also warned residents against politicians who, according to him, would make attractive promises during the 2027 election campaign.
He argued that Lagos, given its economic importance to Nigeria, should not be entrusted to an inexperienced leader.
The deputy governor further pointed to his years in the Lagos State Government, saying he had served as Commissioner for Science and Technology, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, and currently as Deputy Governor.
He recalled that former Lagos Governor and incumbent President Bola Tinubu invited him to join his administration after seeing him present a paper in New York in 2005.
“I understand the history and politics of Lagos,” Hamzat said.
The Lagos APC Governance Advisory Council adopted Hamzat as its consensus governorship candidate in April 2026, although the party said its constitutional primary process would still apply.
