The Lagos State Government has approved key demands presented by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and directed the union to call off its ongoing strike in state-owned universities.

The approval was contained in a letter dated October 7, 2026, signed by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr Tolani Sule.

According to the letter, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the domestication and implementation of the ASUU, SSANU, NASU and NAAT agreements in Lagos State-owned tertiary institutions.

For academic staff, the government approved a 40 per cent Consolidated Academic Tertiary Allowance (CATA) and 10 per cent Earned Academic Allowance (EAA).

It also approved monthly allowances of ₦70,000 for Readers and ₦145,000 for Professors, while non-academic staff will receive a 35 per cent revised allowance.

The approved allowances are effective from January 1, 2026, with arrears to be paid in two tranches alongside the October and November 2026 salaries.

The government further approved that the allowances covered by the agreements would be tax-free.

Sule said relevant government agencies had been directed to begin immediate implementation of the approvals in line with existing financial regulations.

He subsequently appealed to the ASUU leadership to direct its members to suspend the ongoing strike and resume work immediately.

The commissioner thanked the unions for their patience and understanding during the negotiations and urged them to continue to maintain industrial peace across the state-owned tertiary institutions.
