By The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expelled two politicians who contested the party’s primaries for the 2026 Lagos State House of Assembly election before securing tickets to contest under another political party.
The affected politicians are former Agege Local Government Chairman, Chief Ganiyu Kolawole Egunjobi, and Azeez Yusuf, who contested the APC primaries for Agege Constituencies I and II respectively.
The expulsion was announced on Wednesday by Lagos APC Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, who accused the two politicians of anti-party activities, disloyalty and conduct considered inimical to the integrity and discipline of the party.
Egunjobi and Yusuf had participated in the APC’s nomination process but failed to emerge as the party’s candidates for their respective constituencies.
They subsequently obtained tickets from the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) to contest the same constituencies.
The Lagos APC said their decision amounted to a breach of the obligations expected of party members.
Ojelabi said members who lose internal contests are expected to accept the outcome or pursue available avenues of redress within the party and the law, rather than seek another political platform during the same electoral cycle.
The party also rejected what it described as the politicians’ subsequent resignations from the APC, describing them as a “belated and face-saving attempt” to avoid disciplinary action.
The expulsion came after Egunjobi and Yusuf defended their decision to leave the APC, saying their move was driven by what they described as “grave injustice” during the party’s primary process.
They also denied that their decision was connected to Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who has been linked to the political developments surrounding the Agege contest.
The two politicians said they had sought redress within the APC but were dissatisfied with the response from the party, particularly what they described as the lack of meaningful reconciliation.
The APC, however, maintained that their actions amounted to anti-party conduct.
Ojelabi said the party relied on Article 9(5)(II) of the APC Constitution, as amended in 2022, in taking disciplinary action against the two politicians.
The party consequently declared that Egunjobi and Yusuf are no longer members of the APC and have no authority to represent, negotiate or conduct business on behalf of the party.
The Lagos APC also urged its members, supporters, stakeholders and the public not to deal with either politician as an authorised representative of the party.
The development means Egunjobi and Yusuf will now pursue their bids for the Lagos State House of Assembly under the APM, while the APC has formally severed their membership ahead of the 2027 general elections.
