Lagos @ 50: LASU Students Stage “Spirit Of Lagos” At National Art Theatre, Iganmu

Students of the Lagos State University Department of Theatre Arts and Music on Tuesday 23rd May, 2017, lit-up the National Art Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos, with their mesmerizing performance as they staged a Grand Performance titled “Spirit of Lagos” in commemoration of the Lagos at 50 celebrations.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode was ably represented by Special Adviser on Environment, Hon Tunde Hunpe at the 2-day event which commenced on Monday. Other top government officials and invited dignitaries were also present to witness the stage play.

Respected Theatre Arts Practitioners, members of Management, led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Lanre Fagbohun, Staff and Students of Citadel of Learning, as well as members of the General Public also attended the thoroughly entertaining play- Spirit of Lagos, which chronicles the trajectory of Oba Esugbayi, the Oba of Lagos, as he battles the Colonial Governor in an attempt to protect his people against the imposition of water tax.

The story written by Prof Akinwunmi Ishola and Directed by Dr Sola Fosudo is reminiscent of the arrival of colonial master in the former Lagos Colony and the battle for control between the Oba and the Representatives of the British Government. The play practically brought alive the spirit of Lagos.

After the performance, the Governor’s Representative admitted thoroughly enjoying the performance and promised to deliver the Vice Chancellor’s request that the performance be staged at the State House.

The play which can be described as LASU’s gift to the State as she marks 50years was initially performed at the University’s 21st Convocation Ceremonies in March, 2017.
