Current Ballon d’Or holder and Real Madrid forward, Karim Benzema has announced his retirement from international football a day after France lost to Argentina in the 2022 world cup.

The 35-year-old striker made this known in a tweet on Monday.

Benzema, who was included in the French squad that reached the final of Qatar 2022, missed the tournament due to a thigh injury he sustained on the eve of the tournament.

Recall that Benzema was involved in a blackmail scandal with another teammate, Mathieu Valbuena which soured his relationship with the French squad and got the footballer frozen out of the squad for five years.

However, Benzema returned at Euro 2020, where he scored four goals in four games before France was eliminated on penalties by Switzerland.

Benzema tweeted, “I made the effort and the mistakes it took to be where I am today and I’m proud of it!

“I have written my story and ours is ending. #Nueve”.

Meanwhile, defending champions France failed to clinch the World Cup for the second consecutive time, after losing on penalties to Lionel Messi-led Argentina.
