Kano Protests Seek Return of Deposed Emir Aminu Bayero

By Muminat Ajide

Supporters of Aminu Bayero, the deposed Emir of Kano, have staged protests across the five emirates in response to his removal from power. The emirates include Bichi, Rano, Karaye, Kano, and Gaya.

Bayero was dethroned after Kano Governor Abba Yusuf signed a new law repealing the Emirate Council Law 2019, which had divided the Kano emirate into five jurisdictions and facilitated the removal of Muhammadu Sanusi in 2020.

Sanusi was reinstated as the 16th Emir of Kano in a ceremony at the government house on Thursday and has since taken residence in the palace.

Bayero returned to Kano early Saturday and settled in the palace in Nassarawa LG before the governor ordered his arrest.

Protesters, bearing banners and placards with various messages, demand Bayero’s reinstatement and express discontent with the government, alleging political motives behind the Emirship dispute.
