Joshua apologises for post-fight rant after Usyk defeat, blames mental health

Anthony Joshua has said he ‘let himself down’ after failing to reclaim his WBO, WBA and IBF heavyweight titles from Oleksandr Usyk.

The Ukrainian, who outclassed the Nigerian-born boxer, won their anticipated rematch on Saturday inside the Jeddah Superdome after 12 hard-fought rounds by split decision.

After losing the fight, a visibly enraged Joshua put up a drama after he took the microphone from winner Usyk and went on a four-minute monologue.

In his post-fight interview, the 32-year-old, however, frequently complimented Usyk for his performance in their rematch.

Apologising for his actions, Joshua admitted that he failed to control his emotions, promising to work on himself.

He tweeted on Sunday, “I wish Usyk continued success in your quest for greatness. You are a class act champ.

“Yesterday I had to mentally take myself into a dark place to compete for the championship belts! I had two fights, one with Usyk and one with my emotions and both got the better of me.

“I’ll be the first to admit, I let my self down. I acted out of pure passion and emotion and when not controlled it ain’t great. I love this sport so so much and I’ll be better from this point on. Respect.”
