Joan Laporta Is Barcelona’s New President

The race to who becomes Josep Maria Bartomeu’s replacement as FC Barcelona President has come to a halt.

Club members on Sunday elected Joan Laporta as the new president.

The 58-year-old, who had previously held the position at the Nou Camp between 2003 and 2010, won the vote beating close rivals — Victor Font and Toni Freixa.

During his tenure as President of FC Barcelona, the club set a new record for trophies won in one year, winning six in 2009.

According to the final results, Laporta got 57.69 per cent of the vote, with Font trailing behind with 31.11 per cent, while Freixa managed to secure 10.01 per cent.

It would be recalled that police raided the offices of Football Club Barcelona, exactly six days ahead of the presidential elections.

Several persons including former club president Josep Maria Bartomeu, were arrested during the operation.

Bartomeu, who resigned in October following months of controversy and heavy criticisms, was apprehended alongside CEO Oscar Grau and the club’s head of legal services, according to Spainish radio Cadena Ser.
