Afrobeats music star Tiwa Savage has spoken candidly about her emotional struggles after childbirth, revealing that she initially found it difficult to bond with her son and even cried when she learned she had given birth to a boy.

The singer made the disclosure during a recent interview with YouTuber Korty EO, where she said she had always hoped for a daughter, a preference that shaped her early reaction to motherhood.

Savage explained that the disappointment she felt at the time, combined with the physical and emotional toll of childbirth, affected her relationship with her son during his early years. According to her, she did not feel an immediate connection and struggled for nearly two years to fully bond with him.

She also recalled how childbirth impacted her confidence and career, noting that changes in her appearance led to her being dropped from a major brand campaign. At the time, she said, the experience made her feel as though motherhood had derailed her professional life.

Reflecting on that period, the award-winning singer admitted she felt overwhelmed and misplaced her frustrations, believing her career had suffered because of her son’s arrival. However, she said time and growth completely changed her perspective.

Looking back now, Savage described the experience as one she is grateful for, saying her son has grown into her closest companion and source of joy. She referred to him as her “best friend,” adding that motherhood has reshaped her values and priorities.

The singer also revealed that her personal experiences in relationships have influenced how she is raising her son. She said she consistently advises him to treat women with respect and kindness, stressing the importance of raising him to be a good and compassionate man.

Tiwa Savage welcomed her son, Jamil Balogun, in July 2015 with her former husband, Tunji Balogun. Jamil turned 10 years old in July 2025, marking a decade that Savage says has transformed her understanding of love, resilience and motherhood.
