It’s official! Jose Paseiro is new Super Eagles head coach

José Santos Peseiro has been appointed as the new Head Coach of Nigeria’s Senior Men National Team, Super Eagles.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed the development in a statement on Sunday, saying the appointment is with immediate effect, subject to the signing of agreed terms between the body and the 62-year-old Portuguese gaffer.

“Peseiro is expected to lead out the Super Eagles for the first time during the upcoming tour of the United States of America, during which the three–time African champions will slug it out with Mexico and Ecuador ‘A’ Teams in prestige friendlies,” the statement said.

The NFF also appointed former Nigeria international forward, Finidi George as 1st Assistant to Peseiro, while Salisu Yusuf will be second Assistant as well as Head Coach of the CHAN and U23 National Teams.

Other appointments include Usman Abdallah who will serve the third Assistant as Eboboritse Uwejamomere and another former Nigeria international, Ike Shorounmu will be the Match Analyst and the Goalkeepers’ Trainer, respectively.

The new Super Eagles boss has top-level coaching qualifications/training, and has coached at top clubs such as Sporting Lisbon, FC Porto, Panathinaikos, Rapid Bucharest, Sporting Braga, Victoria Gumaraes, Al-Hilal, Al-Wahda, Al-Ahly Cairo, Sharjah FC and Real Madrid (assistant coach during the Galacticos era). He has served as Head Coach of the Saudi Arabian and Venezuelan National Teams.

In December 2021, the NFF had announced the Portuguese as the Head Coach of the Senior Men’s National Team Eagles, replacing Gernot Rohr.

However, the federation would later reverse the decision and retained former Nigerian international, Austin Eguavoen as the head of a reconstituted technical crew of the Super Eagles.
