Int’l Day Of The Midwife: Toyin Saraki Presents Midwifery Service Framework To Senate President

The Global Ambassador for the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), Mrs Toyin Saraki led a delegation to visit the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki at the National Assembly.

The visit was among several other events in commemoration of the International Day of the Midwife (IDM).

The delegation included members of the United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA) and National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM).

Mrs Saraki, who is also the founder of Wellbeing Foundation Africa presented The ICM Midwifery Services Framework to her husband, the President of the Nigerian Senate on Wednesday, May 10th.

May 5th is the internationally recognised day for highlighting the work of midwives. ICM established the idea of the ‘International Day of the Midwife’ following suggestions and discussion among Midwives Associations in the late 1980s, then launched the initiative formally in 1992.

The theme for IDM 2017 is “Midwives, Mothers and Families: Partners for Life!”. Midwives everywhere understand that by working in partnership with women and their families they can support them to make better decisions about what they need to have a safe and fulfilling birth.
