Graduating with distinction in a field like Mathematics is no mean feat, but Aminat Gbadamosi has proven that it’s possible over time.

She graduated with first class in Mathematics from the Lagos State University, then earned a perfect CGPA in her Master’s in Statistics and Analytics at Central Michigan University in the United States. Now she’s on the verge of completing her PhD in the same field, doing groundbreaking research on probability distribution.

In this interview with BlackBox Nigeria, she shares her academic background, research work and future plans.

What inspired you to pursue a career in mathematics and statistics?

Growing up, I was always intrigued by the world of numbers and patterns. Mathematics, with its elegance and precision, fascinated me from an early age. As I delved deeper into the subject, I realized the profound impact that mathematics and statistics have on virtually every aspect of our lives, from economics and finance to healthcare and technology. This realization sparked my passion for pursuing a career in mathematics and statistics, driven by a desire to unravel the mysteries of the universe through the language of numbers.

How did your experience at Lagos State University shape your academic journey?

My time at Lagos State University was instrumental in shaping my academic journey and laying the foundation for my future endeavors. Graduating with a first-class honor in Mathematics from Lagos State University was a defining moment in my life, instilling in me a sense of pride and accomplishment. The rigorous curriculum, dedicated faculty, and vibrant academic environment at the university nurtured my intellectual curiosity and fueled my ambition to pursue higher education and make meaningful contributions to the field of mathematics and statistics.

Why did you decide to pursue your graduate studies in the United States?

The decision to pursue my graduate studies in the United States was driven by a desire to expand my horizons, immerse myself in a diverse and dynamic academic environment, and gain exposure to cutting-edge research and innovation in the field of statistics and analytics. The United States is renowned for its world-class universities, pioneering research institutions, and unparalleled opportunities for academic and professional growth. By pursuing my graduate studies in the United States, I hoped to broaden my perspective, enhance my skills, and position myself for success in the global arena of mathematics and statistics.

You bagged a Master’s degree in Statistics and Analytics with a perfect CGPA, after graduating with a first class in Mathematics from the Lagos State University and now concluding your PhD program. How does this make you feel?

Earning a Master’s degree in Statistics and Analytics with a perfect CGPA was a momentous achievement that filled me with a profound sense of pride and gratitude. It was a testament to years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance, as well as the unwavering support of my mentors, peers, and loved ones. Building on the foundation laid during my undergraduate studies at Lagos State University, I embraced the challenges and opportunities presented by my graduate studies with enthusiasm and determination. As I near the completion of my PhD program, I am filled with a sense of fulfillment and excitement for the future, knowing that I have overcome obstacles and surpassed expectations to reach this milestone.


Could you tell us more about your research on probability distribution and its significance in the field?

My research on probability distribution focuses on developing innovative methodologies to enhance our understanding and modeling of complex datasets, particularly those characterized by heavy tails. Probability distributions play a crucial role in statistical inference, providing a framework for analyzing and interpreting data, making predictions, and drawing conclusions. By exploring new approaches and techniques for modeling probability distributions, my research aims to address practical challenges and contribute to advancements in the field of statistics and analytics. From finance and risk management to healthcare and environmental science, the significance of probability distribution research transcends disciplinary boundaries, offering insights and solutions to real-world problems.

What challenges did you face while pursuing higher education abroad, and how did you overcome them?

Pursuing higher education abroad presented its fair share of challenges, from adapting to a new academic and cultural environment to navigating the complexities of visa requirements and financial constraints. However, with resilience, determination, and support from mentors and peers, I was able to overcome these challenges and thrive in my academic pursuits. Embracing a growth mindset, seeking guidance from experienced professionals, and leveraging available resources enabled me to surmount obstacles and transform challenges into opportunities for personal and intellectual growth.

How do you balance your academic commitments with your professional and leadership roles?

Balancing academic commitments with professional and leadership roles requires effective time management, prioritization, and delegation. By creating a structured schedule, setting realistic goals, and maintaining open communication with colleagues and supervisors, I strive to optimize productivity and efficiency in all aspects of my life. Additionally, cultivating a supportive network of mentors, peers, and collaborators enables me to seek guidance, share responsibilities, and collaborate on projects, fostering a culture of mutual support and success.

Can you share some insights into your dissertation and the innovative methodologies you developed?

My dissertation focuses on exploring a new probability distribution that represents a significant advancement in the field of statistical modeling for heavy-tailed datasets. This innovative methodology merges characteristics from two existing distributions, combining their strengths to create a versatile framework for analysis.

While I would love to share the specific name of this distribution, I must exercise caution as my work has not yet been published. Revealing the name at this stage could potentially expose my research to being replicated or misappropriated by others before I have had the opportunity to formally publish and establish ownership of my findings.

However, rest assured that this new methodology offers several advantages over traditional approaches, including enhanced flexibility, improved goodness-of-fit, and greater interpretability. By harnessing the synergies between different distributional properties, this approach provides researchers with a powerful tool for accurately.

What advice do you have for aspiring mathematicians and statisticians who want to make a difference in the field?

My advice to aspiring mathematicians and statisticians is to embrace curiosity, pursue excellence, and never lose sight of their passion for learning and discovery. The journey to success may be challenging and fraught with obstacles, but with perseverance, dedication, and a growth mindset, anything is possible. Seek out mentors, seize opportunities for collaboration and mentorship, and never underestimate the power of hard work and determination. Most importantly, stay true to your values, follow your instincts, and let your passion for mathematics and statistics guide you on your path to making a difference in the world.

In the future, I aspire to continue making meaningful contributions to the field of mathematics and statistics through cutting-edge research, innovative teaching, and impactful leadership. Whether in academia, industry, or public service, my goal is to leverage my expertise and passion for mathematics and statistics to address pressing challenges, advance knowledge, and empower individuals and communities around the world. From mentoring the next generation of scholars to leading interdisciplinary research initiatives, I am committed to making a positive and lasting impact on the world through my academic and professional endeavors.

Through my research on probability distribution and its applications, I hope to develop new methodologies, tools, and insights that will enhance our understanding of complex phenomena and inform decision-making in diverse fields. By disseminating my findings through publications, presentations, and outreach activities, I aim to catalyze dialogue, stimulate creativity, and drive progress in the field of mathematics and statistics, ultimately contributing to the betterment of society and the advancement of human knowledge.
