Ikorodu Division And Lagos @50 By Bello Akeem

Ikorodu division amongst other divisions in Lagos State had voices in the past that speaks while others listen on issues of developmental importance to the citizens and inhabitants of the state. Those voices were recognized and heard by the powers that be at the corridor of power since the creation of the State, even during military regimes. It is worrisome to note and I stand to be corrected that since the third republic, voices of our people in the division seemed to have gone down or disappear into oblivion.

This submition is informed by the argument that the low percentage of representation of Ikorodu division in the Executive arm of the State is a thing that worries a great number indigenes of the division.

We are all expectant to rejoice and celebrate Lagos State at 50, and it is a thing of joy to be part of the testimony of good governance in Lagos State, that is now considered as the pride of our great nation Nigeria.

Kudos to our political leader and mentor in APC Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unquantifiable contributions during and after his tenure as the Executive Governor of Lagos State.

I also salute the courage and the political will of Mr Babtunde Raji Fashola SAN, the immediate past executive governor of the state who worked hard to build on the structure laid down by his predecessor to put Lagos on the threshold of making Lagos a Mega City.

To say the least without missing words is to commend our energetic, intelligent and ever ready Governor ,His Excellency Governor Akiwumi Ambode for the all round development of the state.

It is my view that Ikorodu division deserve more than the present share of developmental projects that are currently allocated to the division based on the size, population and the rate at which the division is expanding. More road repairs are expedient and construction of new link roads are needed.

I also think that the Ministry of Tourism ought to give each division in the state (IBILE) prominence to showcase their respective cultural heritages as we rejoice at 50 years of the creation of the state.

It wiil not be too late for us as a people in the division, if we can embrace and support the Ikorodu Division Rebirth Foundation (IREP) initiated and sponsored by Hon. SOB Agunbiade in his effort to give Ikorodu a cultural identity and to show to the whole world that ASA AROKOLO CANIVAL can be staged in the division like Eyo carnival to boost tourist potential of the state and be recognised by the state government such that if opportunities comes in future we will be able as a people to show that we have a cultural heritage that will be appreciated if presented to the world.

Let us all in our various communities speak out and be ready to support government policies and always use available legal and Democratic platforms to make our voices heard at the corridors of power in the state.

God bless Ikorodu division.
