Patrice Motsepe, the president of Confederation of Africa Football, CAF, has said he will convince Nigeria’s president Bola Tinubu to make the country bid to host the 2026 World Cup.

Motsepe, who spoke at a press briefing on Friday, said this in a response to a question by a journalist on when Africa will host the World Cup again.

The last and only time the African continent hosted the world’s important football tournament was 2010 in South Africa. The CAF president is hoping that he will convince President Tinubu who is expected to watch the final of the African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast on Sunday.

“Nigeria must put in a bid. The Nigerian president (Bola Tinubu) is coming to watch the final on Sunday…I will have a conversation with him about it,” he said.

In 2003, Nigeria made a bid to host the 2010 World Cup but later withdrew to back South Africa. Sepp Blatter, then FIFA president, said Nigeria’s plan to co host the 2010 FIFA World Cup with four African countries would not work.
