Host Nation, Russia Defeats World Cup Favourite, Spain At Penalty Shoot-out

 

Host of the 2018 World Cup, Russia has managed to edge out one of the top favourite, Spain in the Round of 16 matches in a penalty shoot out after ending the match in draw, even after extra time.

Igor Akinfeev, the Russian goalkeeper also emerged as star player of the match as he saved two penalty shots by Iago Aspas and Koke, which later ended the shoot out in 3-4, in favour of the host Nation, which has advanced the team into the Quarter Finals.

An own goal by Sergei Ignashevich in the 12th minute had put Spain in front earlier in the game, but was later balanced before the end of first half after Gerard Pique fouled in the box, giving out penalty to the Russian side. Artem Dzyuba was able to convert the spot kick to level the game.

The second half was filled with threats from the Spanish side but they were subdued by the Russian defence as all counter attacks were kicked out. The game ended with a draw, even after 30 mins extra time added at the end of Full time open play.

After advancing into the next round of matches, Russia has booked a spot against the winner between Croatia and Denmark, which will kick off later tonight.
