Governor Abba Yusuf has authorized the dismissal of the four emirs installed by his predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje, and has reinstated former CBN governor Khalipha Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano.
Yusuf signed the bill at the government house on Thursday, the same day it was passed by the state house of assembly.
The Kano House of Assembly dissolved the four emirates earlier, effectively removing the emirs installed by Ganduje, stating that Governor Abba Yusuf has the sole constitutional authority to appoint new emirs.
Ganduje had divided the Kano emirate into five and appointed an emir for each, including Karaye, Gaya, Bichi, and Rano. However, the Kano House of Assembly, controlled by the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), repealed the law used by Ganduje to make these changes.
Governor Yusuf, speaking at a media briefing after signing the law, instructed the dismissed monarchs to vacate official residences and palaces within two days and hand over to the Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
