Google has announced a Nigerian artiste, Oxlade, the Labour Party Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and some others as the most searched people in the year 2022.
Google revealed this on Wednesday, December 7, 2022, while announcing the results of its 2022 Year in Search, as it also revealed the most searched terms, actors, musicians, topics, questions and more that captured the interest of Nigerians the most throughout this year.
The top trending lists are revealed in Google’s Year in Search, an annual report that highlights what people search for in order to see, learn, and do.
Nigerians are more interested than ever in politics, entertainment, sports, lifestyle, and famous people, according to the results of this year’s Year in Search.
The 2022 Year in Search lists give a glimpse of what Nigerians were interested in throughout that year, which featured notable athletic events, notable deaths, and the run-up to Nigeria’s election in February 2023.
The top trending searches in the categories of elite athletes and sportspeople were the Africa Cup of Nations, or AFCON, and Brazilian football player Casemiro.
Senegal defeated Egypt to win their first Africa Cup of Nations championship earlier this year, while Nigeria was eliminated from the 2022 AFCON competition by Tunisia in a 1–0 loss. The Academic Staff Union of Universities’ (ASUU) eight-month-long strike put the organization in second place among Nigerians’ most popular searches throughout the time period under consideration.
Nigerians looked for the most popular musicians and individuals this year, and Oxlade, a singer and songwriter from Nigeria, topped both lists. On the list of the top trending musicians, Asake, an Afrobeat singer signed to YBNL Nation, came in second.
The most popular category for trending movies and TV shows was Anikulapo, a Nigerian epic fantasy film starring Kunle Remi and produced by Kunle Afolayan.

Questions like “Who is Atiku’s running mate?” “Who is Peter Obi’s running mate?” “Who is the APC presidential candidate?” “Who is leading in the Osun State election?” and “Who is Tinubu’s running mate?” and “Who Is Peter Obi?” demonstrate Nigerians’ growing interest in politics and the elections scheduled for the following year.
The popularity of entertainment-related search phrases like “Finesse lyrics,” “Buga,” and the song by Kizz Daniel featuring Tekno and “Will Smith” shows Nigerians’ interest in song lyrics, melodies, and famous people.
In a year marked by a number of high-profile passings, the passing of Queen Elizabeth was the loss that received the most online searches, followed by the deaths of gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu in April and actress Ada Ameh in August.
Other frequently asked questions like “What is NATO?” and “How to link NIN?” as well as “How to buy shares?” and “How to register for PVC online?” demonstrated how Nigerians used search to learn more about their interests in 2022.
