This is no doubt great news for the continent as Africa is set to get an additional 4 slots at the most celebrated global football event.
BlackBox Nigeria has learnt that the World Cup is set to expand from 32 participating nations to 48 in a move which was unanimously accepted by FIFA.
Africa will now have 9 teams at the world cup from the previous 5 while Asia will be getting an additional 4. Europe will now have 16teams, 3 more from the previous 13.
This new development according to FIFA takes effect from the 2026 World Cup.
“The FIFA Council unanimously decided on a 48-team #WorldCup as of 2026: 16 groups of 3 teams,” FIFA tweeted via its official account yesterday.
