The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially declared Fuad Laguda, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the Surulere Federal Constituency 1 Bye-Election.
According to the electoral umpire, the APC candidate polled a total of 11,203 votes, beating his closest challengers, Jerry Afemighie of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party’s Adeola Adebanjo who secured 278 and 240 votes respectively.
Laguda, a former APC chairman in Surulere Local Government, succeeds Femi Gbajabiamila, the immediate past Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Gbajabiamila, who won his re-election for the sixth consecutive term, resigned after he was appointed Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu in mid-2023.
Laguda is believed to be the anointed successor of Gbajabiamila. He secured all 30 votes of the delegates during the party’s primary election.
