Former Lagos governorship candidate, Funso Doherty, has officially accepted the nomination of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to contest the 2027 Lagos State governorship election, serving as party flagbearer.

Doherty announced his acceptance in a statement shared on his verified X account on Friday, expressing gratitude to the party leadership and supporters for entrusting him with the ticket.

“With profound humility, gratitude, and a clear sense of purpose, I accept our party’s nomination to serve as its candidate for Governor of Lagos State in 2027,” he wrote.

The NDC flag bearer said he was encouraged by what he described as a shared conviction within the party that Lagos deserves more inclusive leadership capable of delivering better governance for residents.

“I am deeply grateful for the confidence our great party has placed in me and for our shared belief that Lagos deserves much better—inclusive leadership that works for everyone,” Doherty stated.

He added that the campaign would focus on building a better future for the state, declaring that “the real work begins now.”

“Together, we will build the Lagos that we know is possible,” he said.

Photos accompanying the announcement showed Doherty holding the party’s 2026 governorship nomination form and campaign materials bearing the slogan “Ó TI YÁ”, a Yoruba phrase meaning “It’s Time.”

Doherty, who contested the 2023 Lagos governorship election, has been a vocal advocate for transparency, accountability and public sector reforms in the state.

His emergence as the NDC candidate sets the stage for what is expected to be a keenly contested race ahead of the 2027 Lagos governorship election.
