Renowned legal advocate and former Chairman of the Ikeja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Adesina Ogunlana, also known as ‘Serubawon’ has passed away suddenly at the age of 60. His death occurred just days after celebrating his birthday on July 27.
Ogunlana was a prominent figure in Nigeria’s legal community, known for his passionate advocacy and leadership. He founded the Radical Agenda Movement in the NBA and dedicated his career to advancing justice and legal reforms within Nigeria.
As a vocal advocate for social justice, Ogunlana extended his influence beyond the legal profession, engaging with students at Lagos State University (LASU) and participating in various initiatives promoting justice and agitation for positive change.
His commitment to fighting for the rights of others has left a lasting impact on the community. He was also active in the EndSars struggle and represented clients in high-profile cases, including James Olanrewaju Omiyinka, in the Lagos State judicial panel hearings.
Optimist-Yusuf Temilola Nurudeen, a former LASU student leader, shared a heartfelt tribute to Ogunlana, recounting his instrumental role in the LASU Fee Hike struggles in 2014. Ogunlana, as the LASU Students’ Union Lawyer, provided guidance and support to the students, empowering them to fight for their rights. He demonstrated unwavering commitment, joining the students in protests and mobilizing lawyers to demand the release of arrested students.
Nurudeen credited Ogunlana for his success, stating that without his support and mentorship, he would not have achieved his goals. Ogunlana’s selflessness and dedication to the cause were evident in his actions, as he prioritized the needs of others, even when faced with personal challenges.
The Nigerian Bar Association’s Executive Committee released an obituary announcement, praising Ogunlana’s contributions to the legal profession and the country. Burial arrangements are underway, and tributes are pouring in from across Nigeria, celebrating Ogunlana’s life and enduring impact.
“We are deeply saddened by this transition but comforted by the fact that our dear Leader lived an exemplary life worthy of emulation by all. His contribution to our Branch in particular, the legal profession, and the entire country in general will forever remain indelible.”
