Former Vice President, Alex Ekwueme Dies In London Hospital

 

Nigeria’s former Vice President, Dr Alex Ekwueme GCON has been confirmed dead by a family source. He died at the age of 85years.

According to the family source, Igwe Laz Ekwueme, the traditional ruler of Oko, Anambra State, Dr Alex died in a London hospital on Sunday about 10pm.

He said, “The Ekwueme Family regrests to announce the peaceful passing away of their patriarch, the former Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme GCON.

“The sad event occured at the London clinic at 10:00pm on Sunday 19th November, 2019.”

It will be recalled that Dr Alex had slumped in his Enugu residence before he was immediately rushed to Memfys Neurosurgery Hospital, Enugu. He relapsed there and went into coma.

He was recently transferred to London after his health was stable. He has since been receiving treatment until his death late Sunday.

Dr Alex was born on October 21st, 1932 in Oko, Orumba North Local Government in Anambra State. He became the first elected Vice President in Nigeria at the time Alhaji Shehu Shagari was also elected as President. He was in office from October 1st, 1979 till December 31st, 1983.
