Former IGP, Tafa Balogun is dead

Reports reaching BlackBox Nigeria indicate that a former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Tafa Balogun, has died.

According to family sources, he died at a hospital in the Lekki area of Lagos on Thursday evening after a brief illness. He was aged 74.

Balogun served as the IGP between 2002 and 2004 before he resigned his position following several allegations of corruptions.

The Ila Orangun-born police officer was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) under Nuhu Ribadu on eight count charges bordering on diversion and embezzlement of public funds.

In 2015, Balogun pleaded guilty to the charges levelled against him, and was sentenced to six months imprisonment by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, after spending 67 days in custody of the EFCC.
