Today marks another milestone in the history of Lagos State, as it is fifteen years anniversary to commemorate the demise of former military administrator of Lagos State, Air Commodore Gbolahan Mudasiru. This year’s anniversary is accompanied with the announcement of the Gbolahan Mudasiru Foundation by its Board of Trustees.
The Foundation marking the 15 years of the demise of the military administrator according to the Trustees is set up primarily to establish and fund schorlaships to academically distinguished and economically disadvantage indigenes of Lagos State.
The foundation is slated to partner with various levels of Government by funding the provision and training of teachers, and the building, refurbishment and maintenance of public schools in Lagos State.
According to the official statement released today by the foundation’s Board of Trustees and obtained by BlackBox Nigeria, the former military administrator proved during his lifetime to be someone passionate and enthusiastic about education.
“we take comfort in the knowledge that much of his adult life was joyfully devoted to positively impacting as many life as he could” the official statement reads.
The late Air Commodore Gbolahan Mudasiru was a Nigerian Airforce Officer who was appointed Governor of Lagos State, Nigeria, holding office between January 1984 and 1986 during the military regimes of General Muhammadu Buhari and his successor, General Ibrahim Babangida.
As governor, he continued the work of his predecessor Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande in improving schools infrastructure and the standards of teaching. He also introduced improved measures to keep the streets clean and orderly. He attempted to ban street traders, but without success. He set up committees to review the Lagos Metro line project initiated by Jakande, which recommended going ahead with the project, but it was cancelled on the orders of the head of state, General Buhari. After a major fire outbreak devastated the Oko-Baba area of Ebute Meta, Mudasiru initiated construction of a medium Income Housing Estate. After he left office, construction of schools ceased and existing buildings were no longer maintained.
Mudasiru joined his ancestors on the 23 of September 2003 at the age of 58 and was buried in London.
